What is gender identity?

2025-03-07 2:39 Đăng tải

In this colorful and diverse world, gender identity can be regarded as one of the key dimensions that shape individual uniqueness. It is like a brilliant spectrum that spans male and female identities, and each of us searches for the coordinates of our self-awareness and identity on it. On this spectrum, there are not only traditional male and female identities, but also diverse and unique forms of existence such as non binary gender and transgender individuals. It is particularly noteworthy that gender identity is not determined by the gender assigned at birth. It can go beyond this established framework and become an important way for people to explore and define their true selves.

Some gender identities include:

  • Female: A term commonly used to describe someone who identifies as a woman. However, not all people who identify themselves as women are designated as women at birth, nor are all people who are designated as women at birth identifying themselves as women.

  • Non binary gender: a general term used to describe individuals who do not identify themselves as completely male or female. Non binary individuals may perceive themselves as neither male nor female, a combination of two genders, or a completely different identity.

  • Gender fluidity: a term used to describe individuals whose gender identity changes over time or is not fixed to a specific gender.

  • Transgender women: The abbreviation for "transgender women" refers to individuals whose gender identity and/or expression is female, but who were designated as male at birth.

  • Transgender male: The abbreviation for "transgender male" refers to a person whose gender identity and/or gender expression is male, but who was designated as female at birth.

  • Bisexuals: A general term used to describe various situations where a person's reproductive or sexual anatomy at birth does not seem to conform to typical female or male definitions.

  • All gender: a term used to describe individuals who identify themselves as of all genders or multiple genders.

  • Multi gender individuals: a term used to describe those who identify as individuals of multiple genders.

  • Bisexuals: a term used to describe individuals who identify themselves as two genders.

  • Gender neutral: A term used to describe individuals who identify as having no gender or do not have a gender identity.

  • Gender queer: a term used to describe individuals whose gender identity goes beyond the traditional binary of male/female.

  • Exploring People: A term used to describe individuals who are exploring their gender identity and unsure of their position on the gender spectrum.

  • Androgynous: A term used to describe individuals whose gender identity is a combination of masculine and feminine qualities.

  • Neutral gender: a term used to describe individuals who identify as having a neutral gender or no gender at all.

  • Gender nonconforming: A term used to describe individuals whose gender expression and/or identity do not conform to traditional societal expectations of men/women.

  • Dual Spirit Man: A term used by some indigenous peoples to describe a person with a male or female body (but not limited to this) and possessing male or female traits. Dual spirit individuals can transcend social gender roles, gender expressions, and sexual orientations, and can belong to a third gender.

  • Transgender femininity: an umbrella term used to describe transgender individuals (usually but not limited to those designated as male at birth) who possess feminine qualities and/or express themselves in a feminized manner. Transgender femininity is associated with femininity, but does not always identify as feminine.

  • Transgender Masculine: A general term used to describe transgender individuals (usually but not limited to those designated as female at birth) who possess masculine qualities and/or express themselves in a masculine manner. Transgender masculinity is associated with masculinity, but does not always identify as male.

  • Womxn: An alternative spelling for "women", sometimes used to reflect intersectionality, is more inclusive, and covers non cisgender women.

Note: These definitions are not exhaustive, and it should be noted that they are personalized and vary from person to person.
