The meaning and history behind the proud flag

Dec. 16, 2024, 5:16 PM Release

The original rainbow flag had eight colors representing different aspects of life for the LGBTQ+community: pink represents symbolism, red represents life, orange represents healing, yellow represents sunshine, green represents nature, blue-green represents art, indigo represents harmony, and purple represents spirit.

The Evolution of Rainbow Flag

Two colors were removed from the original rainbow flag design in 1978 because the cost of pink and blue-green was too high to be mass-produced. Due to this design choice, the rainbow flags we usually see now come in six colors.

Philadelphia LGBTQ+Pride Flag: In 2017, Philadelphia added brown and black stripes to six other colors.

Progressive Pride Flag: Graphic designer Daniel Quasar redesigned the Progressive Flag based on the redesign of the Philadelphia Flag. It has six common rainbow stripes, with black and brown stripes now forming a V-shaped pattern on the left side of the flag. The light blue, pink, and white colors of the transgender pride flag complement the black and brown stripes.
